There and back again…
Hi! My name is Megan, and I decided to leave my life in the Chicago suburbs to move to a farm in central Illinois for a few months! I’m doing a summer internship at Hungry World Farm, to learn about regenerative agriculture, sustainability, permaculture, and what life on a small scale farm could actually be like.
My background is in Fine Art, and I’ve spent the last 9ish years working as a cake artist in Chicago. While I did enjoy the job, I found that it could often lack meaning, and wasn’t the most fulfilling. I’ve had a growing desire in the past few years to get out into nature and learn how to care for this earth, so that I can use my brief time on this planet to give back to it. And life is too short to be afraid of changing things up! I’m incredibly privileged to have the support of family, friends, and my community, and with their help, I'm able to (temporarily?) quit my job for the summer to pursue this learning opportunity.
My internship will most likely include working and learning in the market garden, helping run the weekly community meals, and helping out with operations and hospitality (and petting the baby goats whenever I get the chance).
I’m a big Lord of the Rings fan, and feel a bit like Bilbo, embarking on an adventure that is a complete change of pace. While I don’t expect to encounter any dragons, I do expect this to be full of unforeseen surprises. Come along with me on my farming adventure “there and back again”!
